Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital has an exciting opportunity for a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to join our team. The PA or NP will join a team of 2 Advanced Practice Providers and 3 attending surgeons. Duties include: Comprehensive evaluation, treatment, and documentation of all cardiothoracic surgery patients in the Pre-operative, intraoperative and postoperative periods as well as follow up after discharge to ensure there is continuity of care in patient management. Rounding in the ICU and on the floor (usual patient load per PA 2-3). Patient evaluation and treatment after team discussion with supervising physician as well as clear and concise documentation in the electronic medical records, placing orders on patients, following up on orders completion. This will include daily progress notes, consult notes, discharge summaries and patient education. Operating Room: Perform conduit harvesting for Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (Endoscopic and open vein and radial artery), first assist during Cardiac and thoracic cases. Cases include CABG, Valve repair and replacements, Aortic aneurysm replacements, aortic dissections. Also, there will be an opportunity and the need for cross coverage with thoracic surgery cases including open and minimally invasive esophagectomies and lung resections via VATS. Office Responsibilities: See patients for clinic visits, small office procedures, returning phone calls and providing education and clarification to the patients and their family members using all the tools available.

  • Conducts thorough medical histories and performs complete physical examinations.
  • Initiates appropriate lab, radiology tests or other special tests required for evaluation of illness.
  • Scrutinizes lab data on new and former clinic patients and hospital admissions.
  • Develops a working diagnosis and treatment plan.
  • Performs and interprets common laboratory, radiologic, cardiographic and other routine diagnostic procedures.
  • Performs routine procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care.
  • Assists in the management of more complex illness and injury.
  • May prescribe and monitor medications as allowed by prescriptive authority.
  • Performs specialized procedures, including bone marrow aspirations, biopsies and harvest, blood draws, designated IV starts, spinal taps, thoracentesis and paracentesis.
  • Provides information and answers routine questions of patients regarding their disease.
  • Educates patients regarding their disease, treatments, related drug and treatment side effects and hazards.
  • Participates in medical team rounds and collaborates with nursing, medical and other healthcare team members.
  • Refers patients to specialists as appropriate for consultation or for specialized health resources and treatment.
  • Ensures continuity of care by serving as a liaison between patient and other members of the multi-disciplinary care team.
  • Participates in quality monitoring through the review of records and treatment plans for patient outcomes.
  • Facilitates appropriate length of stay, discharge planning and compliance with regulatory standards for inpatient management.
  • May serve as clinical preceptor for PA/APRN students and other health professionals.
  • MSN or higher graduate degree in nursing required for APRN.
  • Graduate of an accredited ARPN graduate program.
  • Graduate of an A.R.C.-approved Physician Assistant Program.
  • Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies and/or applicable state license through the State Medical Board for certificate to practice.
  • Currently licensed as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in applicable state.
  • National certification as Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by nationally accredited organization.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA) required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) may be required based upon work setting.
  • Current certification as a Physician Assistant through the NCCPA.
  • Licensed by the State Medical Board of Florida as a PA-C.
  • 3 years of CT surgery experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Newly licensed PAs and NPs that are Acute Care will be considered, especially with cardiothoracic clinical rotations.
