The Labor and Delivery Physician Assistant assists, monitors, and manages the day-to-day needs of patients as requested by, in conjunction with, and under the supervision of a physician. Performs the duties and responsibilities of a Physician Assistant according to customary and generally accepted medical standards. Obstetrical/Women's Health experience required for this position. Evaluate and triage patients presenting to L&D. Perform comprehensive history and physical examination and develop initial management plans in collaboration with the resident and attending physician. Interpret FHR tracings & communicate findings to the care team. Manage uncomplicated laboring patients, including performing cervical exams, ordering appropriate medications and providing patient education and support. Perform procedures within scope of practice. Serve as first-assistant in C-sections & other ob surgical procedures when residents are in protected time. Assist attending physicians and residents with vaginal deliveries. Manage immediate postpartum period - assess for hemorrhage and urinary retention. Do postpartum round, managing common post-partum issues. Provide thorough patient education on postpartum recovery, contraception. Facilitate patient discharges, ensuring all necessary prescriptions, follow up appointments, instructions, discharge summaries and discharge reconciliations are in place. Serve as a consistent clinical resource and point of continuity for nursing staff and residents, helping to orient new team members to unit protocols. Ensure seamless handoffs and communication during shift changes. Participate in daily team huddles, rounds and department meetings.
