About The Position

The position of Physician Assistant in the Department of Medicine, Hematology/Oncology Division, requires a highly competent, independent yet team-oriented individual who will be a critical part of the team for caring for patients. Under the supervision of Medical Director(s) and the APP Supervisor, and guided by the applicable policies and procedures, the Physician Assistant will participate in the comprehensive care of patients in the inpatient settings at the UCI Medical Center Douglas Hospital in Orange, and provide multi-disciplinary care coordination, treatment, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians. A Physician Assistant is an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) who possesses the advanced education, knowledge, clinical skills and experience necessary to provide advanced nursing care in their area of specialization.

Requirements

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data, and progress notes.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate medical information effectively to diverse audiences in person and over the phone.
  • Proven patient care skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility when interacting with physicians, nurses, paramedical personnel, administrators, and emergency or law enforcement officers.
  • Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload.
  • Must demonstrate skills, knowledge, and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties.
  • Capable of being trained in specialized medical equipment and procedures.
  • Understanding and adherence to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies regarding Protected Health Information (PHI).
  • Successful completion of an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
  • Current, active, unrestricted California Registered license.
  • Current, active, unrestricted California Physician Assistant license.
  • Current, active, unrestricted Furnishing license and DEA registration.
  • Active National Provider Identifier (NPI).
  • Acceptable Certifications: National board certification as Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP-BC or ACNPC-AG).
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications.
  • Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Certification (ACONP) and/or ONS Chemotherapy Certification required within 3 months of hire.
  • At least 2 years of experience in hematology/oncology and inpatient or acute care.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working as a Physician Assistant in Hematology/Oncology.
  • Experience caring for patients enrolled in early phase clinical trials and functioning as a co-investigator.

Responsibilities

  • Functions as appropriate to their 'scope of practice' including the management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and surgical procedures per their approved standardized procedure.
  • Provide patient care in age groups based on educational preparation and at all Health licensed settings and affiliates.
  • Responsible for the standards of care for their specified patient population and evidence self-direction and accountability both to quality of care and in the development of their role within all Health locations and affiliates.
  • Be credentialed to practice and be privileged through Medical Staff to function in their clinical role.
  • Accountable to, evaluated, and provided feedback by the supervising/collaborating physician, physician designee(s) in the same clinical specialty, or the Administrative Manager.
