About The Position

The Physician Assistant (PA) for Gastroenterologists provides collaborative patient management under the direction of board-certified/eligible physicians. The PA implements and maintains PA requirements, both programmatic and competency-specific to Gastroenterologist Programs. This position is clinically responsible and accountable for the application of the PA process, providing clinical guidance to the team, research involvement, consultative services, inter and intradepartmental liaison, education, and patient care management across the healthcare continuum from preventative care through discharge.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program required.
  • Minimum 3 years of Gastroenterologist experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated expertise in first assisting and bedside management of Gastroenterologist patients.
  • Current, unrestricted Physician Assistant license issued by the State of CA.
  • Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Maintenance of appropriate CME requirements.
  • Current ACLS and BLS certification.
  • Active DEA license.
  • Written prescription privilege protocols signed by all attending physicians.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and document history and physical examinations.
  • Write appropriate admission orders.
  • Review abnormal findings and coordinate additional testing or consultations.
  • Document progress notes.
  • Evaluate unstable patients and initiate emergency management.
  • Collaborate on procedure scheduling.
  • Assist with data collection.
  • Provide patient education.
  • First and second assist in endoscopic and other Gastroenterologist procedures.
  • Place indwelling catheters.
  • Assist in patient preparation.
  • Perform delegated closure procedures.
  • Monitor and coordinate patient transport.
  • Write and manage postoperative orders.
  • Monitor early postoperative period.
  • Initiate treatment of postoperative complications.
  • Communicate effectively with attending physicians.
  • Perform daily patient assessments.
  • Complete discharge summaries.
