About The Position

The Assistant Chief, Geriatrics and Extended Care (G&EC)/Home Based Primary Care (HBPC) Medical Director provides administrative and clinical oversight of G&EC services including Home Based Primary Care, Geri Pact Clinic, GEM/POSH, Community Living Center (CLC), Contract Nursing Home (CNH), and the Palliative Care and Hospice Program.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States.
  • Completed residency training in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Chief of G&EC, the Chief Nurse of G&EC, the G&EC Administrative officer (AO) and the Medical Directors of the CLC and the Hospice and Palliative Care Programs to coordinate and support G&EC programs.
  • Assist in the management of the day-to-day activities of the Clinical Services within the Geriatrics and Extended Care service, including the Geri Pact Clinic, GEM/POSH, Community Living Center, Palliative Care and Hospice Program and HBPC.
  • Manage staff, as appropriate, direct patient care as delineated in the clinical privileges list for GEC providers.
  • Manage and provide education for staff, patient and family members regarding illness and/or management of care.
  • Resolve complaints from employees, Veterans, families, and others as they present.
  • Oversee and provide resident and/or trainee supervision, as necessary and/or appropriate.
  • Ensure timely response to consults sent to GEC by the appropriate staff.
  • Support and work with GEC care teams consisting of staff physicians, residents, nurse practitioners, nurses, clerical staff, and other support staff.
  • Participate in lean processes for the improvement of patient care services.
