MemorialCare Heart & Vascular Institute is seeking to add a board-certified Physician Assistant (PA) to its cardaic surgery practice at MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center in beautiful southern California. The selected PA will be employed by MemorialCare Medical Group, a for-profit multi-specialty group practice affiliated with MemorialCare Medical Foundation. The PA-Cardiac Surgery assists the supervising surgeon in the operating room, but also plays an integral role in the global management of patients undergoing cardiothoracic, vascular, or aortic surgery. Includes all aspects of peri-operative care from performing patient histories and daily rounds to invasive surgical procedures, including the critical retrieval of vascular tissue in coronary bypass procedures. Competitive candidates must have extensive knowledge of artificial cardiac devices, ventilators and the pharmacologic effects of vasoactive/cardiotonic drugs. The PA also provides patient care expertise in the postoperative acute care units, step-down units and regular floors. First assist in the O.R., participate in aortic clinic, endovascular vein harvesting. Be part of one of the larger programs on the west coast for comprehensive aortic diagnosis and treatment. Demonstrate proficiency in management of high acuity cardiothoracic surgical patients based on STS risk metrics. These patients have multiple comorbidities, drug abuse, poorly controlled medical issues such as diabetes and include a significant number of renal failure/dialysis patients. Routinely participate in longer duration and complex OR cases. Demonstrate proficiency in assisting with minimally invasive surgical valve procedures. This requires the PAs to be familiar with groin dissections and assisting using video as opposed to direct visualization. Develop proficiency in closure of and subsequent care of these complex surgical wounds. Maintain the flexibility to accommodate a significant number of urgent to emergent cases anticipating frequent changes in scheduling and add on cases that require the PA to be available for extended hours. Participate in the robust aortic surgery program with multiple incoming referrals on a monthly basis. Maintain availability for acute aortic dissections that require emergency surgery and more regular in person call coverage after midnight. Understands the requirement of every 5th night on-call when fully staffed but with possible increased frequency until that time. Demonstrate proficiency with inpatient hospital care and outpatient clinic work including but not limited to discharge summaries, post-op evaluations, and orders.
