About The Position

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) position at the Indian Health Service in Phoenix, AZ, is a leadership role responsible for overseeing the planning, management, operation, and evaluation of comprehensive health programs across a four-state area, including Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah. The CMO will work closely with the Area Director and Service Unit CEOs to ensure the delivery of high-quality healthcare services and compliance with national policies and accreditation standards.

Requirements

• Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree from an accredited institution.
• One year of supervised experience in a clinical setting (internship or residency).
• Active, unrestricted medical license in a U.S. state or territory.
• Current Board Certification in the relevant specialty by ABMS or AOA.
• Demonstrated administrative and managerial ability in healthcare settings.

Nice To Haves

• Experience working with Tribes and Urban groups to promote IHS programs.
• Knowledge of accreditation standards such as Medicare, TJC, and AAAHC.

Responsibilities

• Plan, coordinate, and manage all aspects of the Area's health care delivery programs.
• Set policy regarding medical practice patterns for each PAIHS facility.
• Approve and select Clinical Director appointments and assist with their supervision.
• Review performance evaluations of direct health care providers by the Service Unit Director and Clinical Director.
• Ensure medical staff bylaws are consistent with IHS national policy and accreditation standards.
