The Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) will work under the supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist to provide rehabilitative care to individuals, including adults with developmental disabilities. This PRN position offers flexible scheduling based on patient needs and department requirements. The PTA will assist in implementing personalized therapy plans, promoting physical health, and supporting patients' mobility, strength, and independence in a clinic setting with a focus on adults with developmental disabilities.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in Physical Therapy Assisting from an accredited program.
  • Current Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) Missouri license.
  • Experience in clinical, outpatient, rehabilitation, or long-term care settings is advantageous.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills to interact effectively with patients, caregivers, and healthcare teams.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively, as this is an as-needed, PRN role.
  • Empathy, patience, and adaptability in dealing with patients with varying abilities and needs.
  • Knowledge of physical therapy modalities, equipment, and interventions.
  • Ability to assist patients with mobility and therapeutic tasks while ensuring safety and proper technique.

Nice To Haves

  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
  • Prior experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Physical Therapist in carrying out therapy plans, including exercises, manual techniques, functional mobility training, and use of assistive devices, to help patients achieve their functional goals.
  • Implement therapy plans designed by the Physical Therapist, including exercises for strengthening, flexibility, balance, and coordination.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive records of patient progress, therapy interventions, and any changes in treatment plans, ensuring compliance with regulations and best practices.
  • Work alongside a multidisciplinary team, including Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, and caregivers, to provide integrated care. Communicate effectively with all team members regarding patient progress.
  • Provide guidance to patients and their families/caregivers on exercises, home programs, safety protocols, and assistive devices to enhance independence and overall physical function.
  • Support patients with mobility challenges during sessions, ensuring proper body mechanics and safety. Assist with transfers, walking, and the use of mobility aids.
  • Support patients with developmental disabilities by promoting an environment of empathy, respect, and encouragement. Work to ensure each patient’s needs are met with individualized care.
  • Follow all regulatory guidelines, safety protocols, and ethical standards of practice. Ensure patient confidentiality is maintained in line with HIPAA guidelines.
