Requirements

  • Education: As required by licensure.
  • Skills: Able to render patient services and may supervise Licensed Physical Therapy Assistants (LPTAs), Therapy Aides and students.
  • Excellent organizational skills to facilitate program development.
  • Demonstrates competency, as appropriate to the ages of patients served, in the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient’s needs; knowledge of normal growth and development; and an understanding of the range of the treatment needed.
  • Skilled in-home program development and family training
  • Knowledge in appropriate selection and use of DME (wheelchairs, walkers, etc.)
  • Computer skills.
  • Licensure Current Physical Therapist license for applicable state required or Physical Therapist Compact Privilege for applicable state required.
  • BLS for Provider certification from the American Heart Association required.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluation and Treatment Implementation Conduct comprehensive evaluations of patients across all age groups—from neonates to geriatrics—using age- and disability-appropriate assessments to establish baselines and develop individualized treatment plans that promote functional improvement.
  • Assess patient abilities and limitations including neuromuscular movement and stability, sensation, perception, muscle strength, range of motion, body mechanics, vocational and prevocational abilities (adults), and developmental milestones (pediatrics).
  • Evaluate patients’ home and work environments and recommend necessary physical barrier modifications or ergonomic adaptations to support safety and function.
  • Treatment Delivery and Monitoring Administer therapy consistent with the treatment plan, employing suitable procedures, equipment, and techniques within the scope of physical therapy practice.
  • Recommend, justify, and arrange for the delivery of therapeutic equipment as needed.
  • Continuously re-evaluate patients, monitor progress, and adjust treatment plans to ensure optimal outcomes.
  • Make discharge recommendations when appropriate.
  • Collaborate and co-treat with therapists and other healthcare professionals to provide integrated, multidisciplinary care.
  • Facilitate the use of orthotic and prosthetic devices to enhance patient mobility and function.
  • Documentation and Communication Maintain clear, accurate, and timely documentation of patient care, including medical records and correspondence with physicians.
  • Ensure that all information is concise, legible, and relevant to the patient’s plan of care, condition, treatment response, and functional outcomes.
  • Tailor verbal and written communication to the age, educational level, and needs of patients, families, and other stakeholders, ensuring information is delivered clearly and appropriately.
  • Patient and Family Education Provide education to patients and families across all age groups to support recovery, self-care, health maintenance, health promotion, and wellness.
  • Supervision Supervise the patient care activities of aides, assistants, attendants, and volunteers, ensuring high standards of care and support are maintained.
