About The Position

The employee in this position will assist the physical therapist in providing physical therapy services to students with educationally relevant orthopedic and developmental needs to access their school environment. The physical therapist assistant (PTA) delivers treatment activities under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist, supports teachers, administrators, and parents in managing student needs, and ensures compliance with federal, state, and local guidelines.

  • Thorough knowledge of physical therapy principles, theory, methods, and their application in the educational environment.

  • Demonstrates skill in providing treatment activities to improve mobility, strength, and functional skills.
  • Ability to administer treatment methods prescribed by the supervising physical therapist.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Ability to provide training and guidance for teachers, parents, and administrators regarding student needs.
  • Ability to collect, maintain, and report data accurately.
  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform medium work exerting in excess of 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to life objects.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to operate required equipment, use measurement devices, and inspect work for accuracy, thoroughness, and adherence to work standards and instructions.
  • Must have an Associate’s Degree from an accredited program for Physical Therapist Assistants.
  • Must be licensed in the state of North Carolina as a Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA).

Responsibilities

  • Participates with the supervising physical therapist in developing individual treatment programs.
  • Administers treatment methods as prescribed by the physical therapist.
  • Proposes modifications of specific treatment procedures as appropriate.
  • Provides consultation and training to teachers, parents, and administrators in the management of therapy programs.
  • May participate and attend IEP meetings and maintain appropriate documentation as directed.
  • Maintains student records in compliance with federal, state, and local guidelines.
  • Participates in Medicaid documentation and reporting when applicable.
  • Compiles data and provides meaningful follow-up consultation.
  • Communicates effectively with teachers, parents, and administrators.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
