About The Position

This position is accountable for providing the various field inspections of materials incorporated into state and other governmental transportation facilities. This position performs hot mix asphalt and concrete testing duties, performs aggregate inspection at production and use facilities, and provides inspection of precast units, steel, guardrail, and any other material incorporated into the transportation system. These activities ensure that these products are produced or supplied in compliance with established specifications.

Requirements

  • Completion of two years of college in engineering technology, pre-engineering or job related technical/science curriculum, PLUS thirty months of engineering experience; OR, six years of engineering experience.
  • Requires the ability to obtain Radiation Safety and Density by the Nuclear Method, Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) I, Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) I, and Mixtures Aggregate Technician certifications within 12 months of hire.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires extensive travel approximately 15,000 miles per year.
  • Requires successful completion of a background screening.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position. As a result, the employee should be aware that if offered non-State employment during state employment or within one year immediately after ending State employment, the employee shall, prior to accepting any such non-State employment offer, notify the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor (OEIG) or may be subject to a fine.

  • Experience with Construction Materials Management System (CMMS) and the Quality Management Plan (QMP) package.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects and ensures materials and products comply with specifications in accordance with the Project Procedures Guide, Manual for Materials Inspection, and the Manual of Test Procedures for Materials.
  • Performs laboratory tests quickly and accurately.
  • Assists producers regarding suggested solutions to materials problems.
  • Develops and maintains complete and accurate material inspection records.
  • Maintains positive relationships with materials suppliers and producers.
  • Performs all duties in compliance with departmental safety policies. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
