About The Position

The Physical Scientist position at the Applied Physics Division focuses on advancing measurement science and technology in critical areas such as advanced manufacturing, national security, and quantum communications. The role involves research and development of novel radiometers, including design, fabrication, and testing of prototypes, as well as software development for data acquisition. Collaboration with internal and external teams is essential, along with the preparation of reports and presentations of findings.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics with 24 semester hours in physical science or related engineering science.
  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level, including design, simulation, and testing of vacuum-compatible instrumentation.
  • Experience with precision optical and radiometric measurements and laser safety procedures.
  • Expertise in software development (Python or Labview) for instrument control and data acquisition.
  • Knowledge of physical processes and physics of light interacting with materials.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling.
  • Familiarity with advanced manufacturing techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in research and development of novel radiometers for extreme ultraviolet wavelengths.
  • Perform electrical and mechanical design, fabrication, and assembly of prototype radiometers.
  • Interact with equipment vendors and outside experts for design and implementation.
  • Develop control software for data acquisition through a GUI interface.
  • Use simulation and models to design and predict radiometer operation.
  • Communicate and collaborate with team members and external teams.
  • Prepare written reports and documentation for operation and safety.
  • Present and publish results as appropriate.
  • Engage with external collaborators for testing.
