About The Position

The Physical Scientist Administrator (Program Officer/Scientific Review Officer) at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) is responsible for conducting scientific and administrative reviews of applications and proposals, providing guidance to grantees and contractors, and managing grants and contracts to support the mission of the NIH. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics with at least 24 semester hours in physical science or related fields.
  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service for GS-12 applicants.
  • Experience in independent health-related research or research administration/extramural activities.
  • For GS-13 level, 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal service is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in managing independent health-related physical science research projects.
  • Supervisory experience in a research environment.
  • Experience in organizing workshops or conferences related to scientific research.

Responsibilities

  • Perform scientific and administrative reviews and analyses of applications/proposals from a programmatic viewpoint.
  • Consult with and advise grantees/contractors during preparation of applications/proposals and provide guidance on program issues.
  • Develop, coordinate and administer grants, cooperative agreements, and contracts established to fulfill the mission of the Branch and Division.
  • Visit universities, research institutions, commercial organizations, and other entities to promote and explain the objectives of the program.
  • Provide policy direction and coordination for the planning and execution of scientific and technical reviews.
  • Utilize scientific knowledge to manage the initial scientific and administrative review of grant applications.
  • Appoint and manage review panels, ensuring a balanced group of experts evaluates applications and proposals.
