The High School Physical Science Teacher position at Garfield High School is a tenure track role aimed at developing students' skills and competence in various fields of science, including general science, earth science, biology, physiology, chemistry, and physics. The teacher will work under the supervision of the School Principal and GHS administrators to enhance students' understanding of scientific methods and problem-solving, as well as the application of science in practical situations.

  • Teaches knowledge and skills in one or more fields of science, including general science, earth science, biology, physiology, chemistry, and physics, in accordance with district curriculum.
  • Promotes critical and creative thinking and analysis in all related subject areas.
  • Creates a safe and conducive classroom environment for individualized and small group instruction.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials for subject area, translating them into learning experiences.
  • Designs learning activities to demonstrate the application of science to everyday existence.
  • Instructs students in the proper use and care of scientific equipment, chemicals, and plant and animal life.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and modifies instructional methods to fit individual needs.
  • Maintains familiarity with district and Connecticut State standardized tests to adapt curriculum for student achievement.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge through seminars, workshops, or research.
  • Organizes and maintains accurate record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior for a functional learning atmosphere.
  • Coordinates with other professional staff members and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids, and other supplies.
  • NJ Instructional Certificate (Teacher of Biology or Biological Science).
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
