Physical education faculty in the Department of Teacher Education teach courses specific to a major and minor in Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) and a course in physical education for elementary education majors. The primary responsibilities of this position would be related to the course with elementary education majors, both teaching the course on campus and supporting the field placements associated with the course. This position would also involve teaching some courses in the PETE major/minor as aligned with their expertise and department needs.

  • Teach undergraduate courses in the Physical Education Teacher Education program.
  • Primary teaching responsibilities will be PETE 212: Physical and Health Education for Elementary School Teachers.
  • Other teaching may include courses in secondary PETE pedagogy (e.g., PETE 276), physical activity and health content (e.g., PETE 367), and/or coaching (e.g., PETE 430).
  • Other courses may be assigned to meet department needs.
  • Total annual teaching load would be approximately 25 credits.
  • Organize and facilitate high-quality placements for teacher candidates in PETE 212
  • Collaborate with the PETE program coordinator and schools to select direct, support, train, and supervise mentor teachers for PETE 212 students
  • Support physical education in the BYU-Public School Partnership districts by, for example, conducting professional development with practicing teachers
  • Establish a pattern of leadership in the broader state, national, and/or international physical education community by, for example, presenting at physical education and/or coaching related professional conferences
  • Participate as a good citizen in the university and profession
  • Fulfill committee assignments and other citizenship activities inside the university, community, and profession
  • Demonstrate a pattern of leadership at the department, school, and university levels
  • Attend department, college, and university meetings (e.g., faculty meeting, devotionals, forums, convocations), including PETE and elementary education faculty meetings
  • Interact appropriately and constructively with students and colleagues
  • Serve within the broader professional community (e.g., committee work for state, regional and/or national professional organizations, reviewer for professional journals and conferences, elected leadership positions within state and/or regional professional organizations)
  • Mentoring students both in and out of classrooms and fostering experiential learning opportunities.
  • Expertise in preparing and supporting future physical education teachers
  • Interest in supporting the learning of preservice elementary teachers
  • Experience in clinical supervision of teacher candidates and/or in-service teachers
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly in situations that require diplomacy and sensitivity
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • PhD or equivalent preferred, masters required. The required degree must be completed by the start date.
  • Minimum of three years teaching within the public-school physical education setting
  • A pattern of successful university teaching with undergraduate students, especially preservice teachers
  • Ability to model effective teaching practices
  • An understanding of the current literature, trends, and issues in physical education
  • Familiarity with using data-supported learning to support instruction in physical education
  • Experience in university public school partnerships or professional development schools
