About The Position

Track & Field Program Head Full-Time Position Reporting to the Director of Athletics Overview The Track & Field Program Head is a full-time teaching position within the Athletic Department. The position’s primary responsibilities include teaching Physical Education classes and directing all aspects of the Upper School and Middle School Track & Field programs. The role includes significant involvement in the Cross-Country program—specifically serving as the Boys Head Cross Country Coach and other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics. The Program Head is expected to be fully present in all facets of the student-athletes’ education and development and to serve as an integrated, visible member of the Lower School, Middle School and Upper School communities. This includes building relationships with students, faculty, families, and staff to support the overall student experience.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Physical Education classes as assigned by the Director of Athletics and Lower School Physical Education Coordinator.
  • Oversee all components of the Upper School and Middle School Track & Field programs.
  • Directly lead the Girls and Boys Upper School Track & Field teams.
  • Serve as the Boys Head Cross Country Coach and provide leadership within the full Cross-Country program.
  • Supervise and coordinate 8–9 assistant coaches (mostly part-time).
  • Ensure alignment among the Sprints/Jumps, Distance, and Throws training groups.
  • Oversee or directly design training and practice plans for all event groups.
  • Be actively engaged with student-athletes in both the Middle School and Upper School, supporting their holistic growth both inside and outside of athletics.
  • Maintain a visible presence in the daily life of the school, including assemblies, advisor support, student programming, and community events.
  • Build strong relationships with student-athletes to support their academic, social, and athletic development.
  • Collaborate with teachers, advisors, counselors, and school leadership to promote student well-being and success across divisions.
  • Integrate fully into both Middle School and Upper School communities to support continuity and connection within the Track & Field and Cross-Country programs.
  • Maintain consistent communication with coaches, athletes, and parents throughout the year.
  • Provide regular updates through the SJS team page, email, and GroupMe.
  • Collaborate with Team Captains’ parents to organize parent volunteers for meet-day support.
  • Manage and update team performance profiles on athletic.net, TxMilesplit, and other platforms as needed.
  • Develop the full season meet schedule and competition calendar by November each year.
  • Coordinate all meet entries and communicate logistics to coaches, athletes, and families.
  • Lead the planning and execution of the Maverick Relays and the Nick Finnegan Spring Invitational: Oversee meet setup, operations, and event management.
  • Coordinate with timing companies and meet officials.
  • Manage teacher and coach volunteers serving in officiating roles.
  • Prepare and manage the annual coed Track & Field budget.
  • Oversee gear orders and maintain accurate financial records for program expenditures and athlete charges.
  • Purchase equipment, uniforms, and meet supplies with detailed accounting.
  • Collaborate with the athletic department to order awards, medals, and plaques for competitions and the end-of-season banquet.
  • Support the admissions process by coordinating closely with the Admissions Office, Director of Athletics, and Middle/Upper School coaches.
  • Track prospective student-athletes using HJPC results, athletic.net, and other performance resources.
