Summary of Role: GlobalFoundries is seeking a motivated intern to join our photonics test team for a 12-week summer program focused on advanced photonic device testing. The role involves executing detailed test plans for components such as optical splitters, waveguides, photodetectors, and lasers, operating across both DC and RF speeds. You will work closely with experienced engineers to ensure accurate characterization and performance validation of cutting-edge photonic technologies. In addition to hands-on testing, the internship includes writing and debugging test automation code and analysis scripts to streamline data collection and interpretation. Candidates will gain experience in troubleshooting complex systems, analyzing large datasets, and contributing to improvements in test methodologies. This position is ideal for students with a strong interest in photonics, programming, and experimental research who are eager to apply their skills in a fast-paced, innovative environment.

Requirements

  • Education - At least a sophomore at time of application and actively pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering or related field through an accredited degree program during the time of internship. Must have at least an overall 3.0 GPA and be in good academic standing.
  • Language Fluency - English (Written & Verbal)
  • Ability to work at least 40 hours per week during the internship.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with definition of test and characterization methodology for advanced silicon photonics components, including photonic resonant structures for ultra-low power optical modulation.
  • Comprehension of high speed electrical and optical test, hardware to software specification
  • Define test plan and framework for data acquisition for at-speed electro-photonic characterization to symbol rates in excess of 67GHz.
  • Data analysis including correlation to in-line process data for performance optimization, AI expertise in data analysis is desired
  • Define a framework for fast and efficient multi-lambda testing for next generation dWDM communication architectures, including auto-correlation of results
  • Perform all activities in a safe and responsible manner and support all Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements and programs.
