Scripps News is looking for a highly skilled, visually driven Photojournalist to join our Washington, D.C., bureau. This is a rare opportunity to contribute to some of the nation’s most impactful storytelling — combining sharp news instincts with exceptional shooting, lighting, and editing skills to deliver compelling video journalism from the epicenter of U.S. politics. WHAT YOU'LL DO: Collaborate with producers and journalists in the initial stages of story development, contributing original ideas and a distinct visual strategy to shape the narrative direction. Assume complete, autonomous responsibility for the entire project lifecycle of documentary-style ENG productions; including independently managing pre-production tasks and overseeing all post-production to create a polished, final product. Independently determine the visual composition, framing, lighting, and audio capture techniques to shoot compelling stories, intimate interviews, and live shots on location. Masterfully utilize in-depth knowledge of LED lighting techniques to set the stage, exercising significant artistic judgment to capture moments. Exercise discretion and independent judgment in unpredictable field environments to adapt the visual approach as a story evolves. Manages all project timelines and logistics to ensure all deadlines are met without direct supervision. Serve as a subject matter expert on visual technology. This expertise extends to advising on gear purchases and working with or leading the team responsible for equipment maintenance to push creative boundaries. Independently troubleshoots and resolves critical technical failures in the field to ensure project succes. Write insightful, context-rich story-tags and text that complement the visual narrative, demonstrating a deep understanding of the story's substance. When required, conduct interviews with a focus on capturing important details pertinent to the story.
