About The Position

Des Moines Register/desmoinesregister.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, seeks a videographer/photographer to join our talented staff in Iowa’s capital city. This journalist should have an interest in telling stories with video, from spot news to mini-documentaries and social media clips. They should also be versed in making still photos that tell stories from sports fields, Iowans’ homes and political rallies. They will also play a key role in training members of our newsroom on video and will track and adopt evolving best practices. This person will join a team of four photojournalists in Iowa, including a photo editor who is a veteran journalist and spends more time making photos than holding meetings. The successful candidate must have a passion for telling stories visually, quickly when needed, in-depth when called for, and always with accuracy. We expect anyone who works with us to constantly improve their skills. We offer internal and company-wide training programs and study metrics, audience and search trends to deliver essential news and information. Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master’s in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three years of experience in professional photojournalism.
  • Solid news judgment.
  • Self-motivation and self-direction.
  • Top-notch planning, organizational and time management skills.
  • A portfolio that shows their command of news video and stills.
  • This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
  • Tuesday-Saturday work week.
