About The Position

The Wall Street Journal is seeking a Photo Editor to support WSJ. Magazine and the Features coverage area in New York. This role involves blending deep reporting, intelligent wit, and good taste to create compulsively readable spot stories, analysis, and features on subjects like style, entertainment, celebrity, society, lifestyle, and the arts, with a fast-paced, robustly reported execution. The ideal candidate will possess a stylish sensibility and journalistic integrity, bringing a background in style news or cultural features assigning and production. A digital, deadline-driven background is essential, requiring the ability to work quickly and accurately on a range of subjects, collaborating with Features editors, reporters, non-staff writers, and contributors. Experience with contemporary portraiture, reportage, conceptual still-life, and deep, expedient research skills are also required.

Requirements

  • At least 3 to 5 years experience in a photo-editing role.
  • A background in editorial production work, conceptualization and assigning of visual content.
  • Excellent news judgment, fast digital editing skills and an expansive understanding of mobile-first experience and design.
  • A strong understanding of contracts and image rights.
  • Deep research skills, including newsgathering and social media tools.
  • Strong organizational, communication and collaborative abilities.
  • A creative vision and enthusiasm to spearhead and collaborate on new ideas.
  • The drive to reach new audiences, an understanding of and appreciation for audience data and SEO-friendly presentation.
  • Knowledge of web tools and programs, including content management systems, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP, and all social media platforms.
  • The ability to be a self-starter who works well with larger teams.
  • Experience with contemporary portraiture, reportage, conceptual still-life.
  • Deep, expedient research skills.
  • A background in style news or cultural features assigning and production.
  • A digital, deadline-driven background.

Responsibilities

  • Produce, pull and build visual assets for WSJ. Magazine and Features content as assigned, including doing photo research, commissioning portraits, reportage, or photo illustration prioritizing digital-first storytelling for the needs of all digital platforms.
  • Always hit deadlines, balancing fast-paced spot deadlines with longer-lead features and enterprise stories.
  • Pitch visually innovative and original approaches to coverage, demonstrating an understanding of the different platforms and audiences.
  • Think in fresh, catchy and witty ways about how to best visually represent columns and analysis, with an eye to social engagement.
  • Work closely with WSJ. Magazine photo editors, WSJ newsroom photo editors, and our platform teams.
  • Meticulously maintain a budget on a monthly basis.
  • Professionally represent Journal interests and negotiate rates with relevant contractors and third-parties.
