About The Position

The UVA Earn While You Learn Trainee Program provides structured coursework and paid on-the-job-training as a full-time, benefitted employee. The EWYL Phlebotomy program is a hybrid program that provides classroom and experiential training for two essential laboratory support areas: Phlebotomy and Specimen Management. This training program qualifies trainees for the Clinical Lab Assistant career path with additional work experience. Upon program completion, trainees will work as either Phlebotomists or Specimen Management Technicians. We are currently reviewing applications for February 2026. The EWYL Phlebotomy program is a hybrid program that provides classroom and experiential training for two essential laboratory support areas: Phlebotomy and Specimen Management. This training program qualifies trainees for the Clinical Lab Assistant career path with additional work experience. Upon program completion, trainees will work as either Phlebotomists or Specimen Management Technicians. Position placement is based on availability and candidate preference.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent.
  • No experience required.
  • No licensure/certifications are required to apply to this role.

Responsibilities

  • Performs blood collection using a variety of techniques to ensure minimal discomfort to the patient.
  • Provides a high standard of customer service while maintaining workflow.
  • Verifies patient identification in accordance with Medical Center Policy with any intervention.
  • Collects laboratory specimen with accuracy and timeliness as indicated by ordering and lab testing priorities.
  • Documents all information related to specimens collected in accordance with departmental policy.
  • Assist with specimen processing and handling in accordance with policy and procedure.
  • Assist with entering lab orders in the electronic information systems.
  • Assist with quality assurance functions and compliance.
  • Adheres to Standard Precaution procedures.
  • Provides for a safe environment and safe delivery of care.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of institution's fire/emergency/infection control programs.
  • Performs administrative support functions.
  • Completes supply stocking, inventory and ordering as directed.
  • Maintains necessary skills and competencies.
  • Identifies strengths and opportunities for professional development and goals for self-improvement.
  • Completes annual mandatory training activities and regulatory in-service requirements with-in established timeframes.
  • Responsible for receiving and processing requests and specimens for Laboratory analysis entering requests into Laboratory computer system transporting of specimens and using problem solving skills.
  • Enters written and receives electronic orders for Laboratory requests into Laboratory Computer System Ensures all specimens received meet specimen acceptance criteria.
  • Operates Pneumatic Tube System (PTS)
  • Investigates documents and resolves problems or complaints
  • Processes Laboratory specimens.
  • Serves as trainer and role model for new Specimen Management Technicians and health care professional students.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of quality safety and compliance programs.
  • Performs area-specific support activities.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
