About The Position

This position supports Mercy Care's philosophy of patient centered care by providing timely and accurate specimen collection and other laboratory support functions. The Phlebotomy Technician exhibits compassion towards our patients, provides outstanding customer service, and demonstrates professional behavior.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of specimen collection procedures, including venipuncture, capillary collection, TB placement, and respiratory swabs.
  • Knowledge of different patient populations and their needs.
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently under pressure without sacrificing quality.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work with interruptions.
  • Skill to use the laboratory information system (LIS).
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to complete appropriate documentation and paperwork clearly and completely.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum age of 18 required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience preferred, but not required.
  • Graduate of a phlebotomy training program or medical assisting program is preferred.
  • Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) or Registered Phlebotomy Technician (American Medical Technologists) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Properly identifies patients and samples during all phases of testing.
  • Follows laboratory procedures for specimen collection, order entry, specimen receiving, and all other duties .
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with physicians, nurses, other medical personnel, patients, and families.
  • Prioritizes workload to ensure timely collection of patient samples.
  • Maintains and improves skills by participating in at least one continuing education activity annually.
  • Actively seeks and identifies opportunities for process improvement.
  • Assists in procedure writing, updating, and validating.
  • Acts as a resource for laboratory medicine information to providers and others.
  • Uses laboratory information system access information and enter information.
  • Educates and trains new staff and students.
  • Perform specimen collection, including phlebotomy, respiratory swabs, and skin tests, with skill and compassion.
  • Answers incoming phone calls and places outgoing phone calls in a timely manner using proper phone etiquette.
  • Receives specimens into the laboratory and delivers to proper locations.
  • Exhibits outstanding customer service to patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Participates in off-site collections and rotate to other locations as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.
  • MercyCare Vernon Village - Phlebotomy duties. Maintain all lab requirements under CLIA regulations, perform QA and controls of all new lab kits. Monitor vaccine refrigerator and freezer temperatures twice daily. maintain lab equipment, including microscopes, autoclave, centrifuge.
  • MercyCare Vernon Village - Other duties would include front office support, scanning information into Epic. Assisting staff with MQM and population management.
