About The Position

The Phlebotomy Support Technician will work under direct supervision to collect blood samples through venipunctures or finger/heel sticks on patients. The technician is responsible for ensuring the quality of blood samples and the safety and comfort of patients, adhering to established standards and practices. The role involves processing all samples within the department, either manually or using automation equipment, including send-outs.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Completion of an accredited program in phlebotomy is preferred.
  • Certification as a registered phlebotomist by a nationally recognized Phlebotomy Society is preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of work experience as a phlebotomist is preferred.
  • Experience in a healthcare environment is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains venous and/or capillary blood specimens according to established procedures.
  • Utilizes a computerized system for logging and tracking specimen collection and patient information.
  • Properly identifies and labels specimens for processing, delivery, and storage.
  • Performs accurate and complete order entry and checks requisitions for proper data entry.
  • May operate simple medical laboratory equipment, such as a centrifuge and microscope.
  • Effectively communicates with laboratory and medical staff to resolve problems regarding specimens.
  • Monitors pending work and resolves specimen issues as needed.
  • Sorts laboratory reports/mail and distributes them to appropriate mailboxes.
  • Performs inventory and ordering of supplies, including requisitions for distribution to clients.
  • Fills all supply requests for client needs.
