About The Position

The position involves performing venipuncture and collecting specimens from newborn, pediatric, and adult patients according to established protocols. Responsibilities include collaborating with patient care for difficult venipunctures, receiving and sorting lab specimens, packaging and tracking specimens for transport, and processing specimens for testing. The role also includes performing limited testing under CLIA guidelines, laboratory result entry, assisting physicians with patient procedures, and maintaining histology equipment. The position requires clerical functions such as patient registration, payment collection, and data entry. The incumbent must demonstrate knowledge of patient care appropriate to the age of the patients served and be able to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate.
  • Typically requires 3 years of experience in phlebotomy and/or related laboratory functions.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and experience in laboratory functions.
  • Basic computer skills including experience using software applications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Performs venipuncture and collects specimens from patients.
  • Collaborates with patient care regarding difficult venipunctures.
  • Receives and sorts lab specimens.
  • Packages and tracks specimens for transport.
  • Processes specimens for testing including centrifuging, aliquoting, and storing samples.
  • Loads instruments while maintaining proper specimen identification.
  • Performs limited testing under CLIA guidelines.
  • Enters laboratory results into the computer system.
  • Assists physicians with patient procedures.
  • Prepares basic histology stains and processes pathology send-outs.
  • Cleans and maintains histology equipment.
  • Completes CAP histology checklist requirements.
  • Tracks surgical specimens in the Pathology computer system.
  • Performs clerical functions including answering calls and data entry.
  • Assists in transfusion department tasks.
