About The Position

Assists the phlebotomy supervisor with oversight of daily operations of the phlebotomy services in the hospital and/or clinic lab service centers. Monitors and completes hands-on training of staff and interns in the phlebotomy training program, in conjunction with Learning and Talent Development. Works closely with other laboratory personnel, Patient Care Services staff, healthcare providers, and patients to obtain high quality specimens while demonstrating the Stormont Vail Tenets.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma / GED Required
  • 1 year Phlebotomy experience, to include venipuncture, capillary puncture, site selection, and patient safety.
  • Ability to drive in a variety of average conditions, e.g. low light (early am, night), inclement weather, highways, bridges, (Required proficiency)
  • Accuracy and attention to detail. (Required proficiency)
  • Follows all OSHA guidelines and hospital and laboratory safety procedures. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety and/or infection control standards. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to deal with stressful situations. (Required proficiency)
  • Drivers License - DMV Current Valid Driver’s License and Clean MVR with 3-year baseline and annual MVR review. Required

Nice To Haves

  • Registered Phlebotomy Technician - AMT ASCP is also accepted. Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for performing the job duties of a phlebotomist.
  • Assist the phlebotomy supervisor with development of the section work schedule.
  • Adjust the daily schedule and individual work assignments as required for efficient utilization of personnel.
  • Ensure effective training and orientation of new staff.
  • Teach and coach new laboratory employees, patient care service trainees, and clinical interns in coordination with Learning and Talent Development educators.
  • Assist phlebotomy supervisor in assessing competency during introductory period and annual performance evaluations of phlebotomists.
  • Provide support to phlebotomy supervisor in investigating and correcting deviations in procedure and professional behavior standards.
  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures.
  • Assists with scheduling float requests, outside blood collections at client locations, and home draws.
  • Assist supervisor with time-keeping responsibilities.
  • Reviews and updates phlebotomy procedures as assigned.
  • Train others to respond to adverse patient reactions to venipuncture.
  • Assist department leadership with maintaining accreditation readiness.
