About The Position

The Phlebotomy Lead is responsible for collecting and processing blood, respiratory, and urine specimens using safe, accurate, and efficient techniques for laboratory testing. This role supports patient diagnosis and treatment by performing waived clinical testing, ensuring proper specimen handling, and maintaining accurate documentation. In addition to clinical duties, the Phlebotomy Lead helps oversee daily lab operations, supports workflow efficiency, and serves as a resource for staff. This position requires strong attention to detail, adherence to safety and infection control standards, and a commitment to high-quality patient care.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent,
  • Current Phlebotomy Technician certificate preferred
  • Previous phlebotomy or laboratory experience in a medical setting required or strongly preferred
  • This position routinely deals with sensitive and confidential information and documents requiring the utmost privacy and confidentiality
  • The Phlebotomist should provide effective communication and interpersonal skills, observe, maintain quality, safety and/or infection control standards, safely operate various medical equipment according to established standards, work as a team member and foster a cooperative work environment, work with a diverse population, sterilize supplies and equipment, and maintain and restock procedure rooms
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen collection and documentation
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and handle sensitive patient information
  • Knowledge of infection control, safety standards, and aseptic technique
  • Ability to perform waived lab testing and follow quality control procedures
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with patients and staff
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to lead by example and support team members in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to organize, prioritize tasks, and maintain workflow efficiency
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
  • Frequent use of hands for specimen collection, typing, and equipment operation
  • Ability to reach, see, hear, and communicate effectively
  • Requires close vision and ability to adjust focus
  • May be required to assist patients, including lifting when necessary
  • Work performed in a clinical environment with occasional travel to other sites as needed

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and collect blood and other specimens for laboratory testing
  • Accurately identify patients, verify restrictions, and document collection details appropriately
  • Process, label, and prepare specimens for transport or testing
  • Perform waived clinical testing in accordance with established protocols
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all laboratory activities
  • Perform and document quality control procedures, routine instrument maintenance, and basic troubleshooting
  • Monitor patients during specimen collection and respond appropriately to adverse reactions
  • Follow aseptic technique and proper handling of potentially infectious specimens
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of lab and collection areas
  • Manage inventory, stock supplies, and ensure equipment functionality
  • Support daily lab workflow and assist with coordinating lab-related processes
  • Serve as a resource for staff regarding lab procedures and best practices
  • Collaborate with clinical staff to support efficient patient care
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
