About The Position

The Phlebotomist position at Advocate Health involves performing venipuncture and collecting specimens from patients of all ages, including newborns, pediatrics, and adults. The role requires collaboration with patient care teams for difficult venipunctures and includes responsibilities such as sorting and processing lab specimens, performing limited testing under CLIA guidelines, and assisting physicians with patient procedures. The position also involves clerical functions such as patient registration and data entry, as well as maintaining knowledge of age-specific care requirements. This is a full-time day shift position with specific hours and holiday rotation.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate.
  • Typically requires 3 years of experience in phlebotomy and/or related laboratory functions.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and experience in laboratory functions.
  • Basic computer skills including experience using software applications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Performs venipuncture and collects specimens from patients according to established protocol.
  • Collaborates with patient care regarding difficult venipunctures.
  • Receives and sorts lab specimens, packages and tracks specimens for transport.
  • Processes specimens for testing including centrifuging, aliquoting, and storing samples.
  • Performs limited testing under CLIA guidelines according to established policies.
  • Assists physicians with patient procedures and prepares basic histology stains.
  • Maintains current knowledge and skills necessary to insert and remove port access devices.
  • Performs clerical functions including answering calls, patient registration, and data entry.
  • Assists in transfusion department and performs related tasks.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of age-specific care requirements.
