About The Position

The Phlebotomist position proficiently and expediently obtains blood samples from patients for diagnostic laboratory testing, while maintaining an attitude of courtesy and professionalism. Venous blood samples are performed on all age populations, including the elderly and the very young. Capillary collections are performed using finger and heel sites generally from infants and children. Also responsible for limited collection of biological samples for microbiology tests if working in the Outpatient Patient Service Center. Other responsibilities include specimen processing and distribution, outpatient reception, and semi-technical and clerical duties intended to support the overall diagnostic services provided by the laboratory. Work usually follows standard operating procedures with exceptions or unusual situations being referred to appropriate technical, nursing, or supervisory personnel. Some analysis and adaptive thinking is required in the application of operating procedures, technical standards, methods, and techniques to perform tasks successfully.

Requirements

  • H.S. Diploma or GED.
  • Washington Medical Assistant Phlebotomist Certification upon hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of Medical Assistant course.
  • Formal education in phlebotomy or college courses in anatomy, physiology, and other clinical sciences.
  • 1 year of computer experience.
  • 1 year of laboratory or related science experience.
  • 1 year of working experience or internship in a clinical laboratory, physician’s office, plasma center, or other related business.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain blood samples from patients for diagnostic laboratory testing.
  • Perform venous blood samples on all age populations.
  • Conduct capillary collections using finger and heel sites from infants and children.
  • Collect biological samples for microbiology tests in the Outpatient Patient Service Center.
  • Process and distribute specimens.
  • Handle outpatient reception duties.
  • Perform semi-technical and clerical duties to support diagnostic services.
  • Follow standard operating procedures and refer unusual situations to appropriate personnel.
