The phlebotomist is responsible for the collection of quality biological specimens for laboratory testing, distribution of specimens to proper departments, and proper preparation and handling of specimens for laboratory analysis. This role involves providing superior customer service, accurately interpreting physician orders, performing invasive procedures like venipuncture and micro capillary collections, and handling specimens to ensure high quality and timely distribution. The phlebotomist must also follow patient registration procedures, strict identification policies, and demonstrate competency in Infection Prevention and Control practices. Computer skills in LIS, HIS, and reference lab systems are necessary for scheduling, order entry, billing, patient registration assistance, and communicating test results confidentially. Adherence to all laboratory policies, procedures, and Federal CLIA, CAP, and OSHA regulations is required, along with the ability to treat patients across all age groups.
