About The Position

Responsible for efficiently and accurately obtaining and preparing specimens for analysis and performing various screening tests.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR)
  • Proficiency in venipuncture and other blood collection techniques
  • Interpersonal skills and compassion
  • Analyzing information, critical thinking, and problem solving
  • Attention to detail to ensure accuracy
  • Compassion, courtesy, and the ability to calm patients during blood collection
  • Basic computer skills

Responsibilities

  • Serves patients by identifying the best method for retrieving blood samples and other specimens, preparing specimens for laboratory testing, and performing screening procedures.
  • Obtains blood specimens and collects nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing.
  • Verifies patient identification and explains sampling procedures to patients.
  • Reassures patients who are nervous about sampling procedures and applies dressings to wounds created by blood draws.
  • Prepares specimens and delivers them to appropriate locations for testing.
  • Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures, and observing isolation procedures.
  • Verifies test requisitions and bring discrepancies to the attention of applicable personnel.
  • Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, nursing staff, or reference laboratory, referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification, and notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.
  • Retrieves lab results and enters them into proper patient charts to be reviewed by the provider.
  • Maintains a safe, secure, clean, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
  • Ensures that the clinic’s phlebotomy supplies and equipment are well-organized and maintained
  • Reports all unsafe/hazardous conditions, defective equipment, etc. to the supervisor immediately
  • Adheres to strict infection control and safety guidelines
  • Understands rules and regulations set forth by Franklin Medical Center. Maintains a good working relationship with fellow employees, physicians, and patients.
