About The Position

Summary: The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting specimens—including blood, urine, and cultures—from patients in accordance with physician orders and established procedures. This role ensures specimen integrity and patient safety through proper identification, collection, labeling, and handling protocols. Specimen collection may occur in outpatient facilities or nursing home settings. The Phlebotomist maintains a customer-focused approach while adhering to regulatory and safety standards.

Requirements

  • Proof of completion of an accredited phlebotomy, military medic, medical assistant, or EMT course.
  • Completion of one of the above programs or at least one year of recent phlebotomy experience.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification in compliance with organizational policy (required).
  • Access to a personal vehicle and a valid driver’s license from any U.S. state is required.
  • Must sign and acknowledge “Attestation A” of the Meritus Vehicle Management Use and Control policy, which outlines personal insurance coverage requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred certification in phlebotomy, medical assisting, or EMT.

Responsibilities

  • Produces consistently accurate work with strong attention to detail, reflecting a commitment to high-quality standards.
  • Performs venipunctures and fingersticks using appropriate techniques.
  • Communicates clearly and respectfully, verifying patient identity by requesting full name and date of birth.
  • Operates within the scope of licensure, certification, and job description, taking personal responsibility for patient care and safety.
  • Complies with National Patient Safety Goals and other regulatory standards; reports and addresses safety risks promptly.
  • Maintains adequate supplies in draw rooms and other designated areas.
  • Empties urine containers at the end of each shift.
  • Clocks out at the end of every shift worked.
