About The Position

The Phlebotomist of Ambulatory Services is cross trained to perform a variety of duties while working collaboratively with the providers and office leadership. In this role you will be responsible for venipunctures and finger sticks, processing requisitions, and preparing specimens to send to the laboratory for processing. This role may require recording vitals, taking patient history, and rooming patients for examination under the supervision of the provider WHO WE ARE With 12 ministries and access points across Indiana and Illinois, Franciscan Health is one of the largest Catholic health care systems in the Midwest. Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 6 months Background in medical laboratory and/or knowledge of medical terminology
  • 6 months Phlebotomy Required
  • Basic Life Support Program (BLS) - American Heart Association

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Phlebotomist Technologist (CPT) - National Phlebotomy Association (NPA)

Responsibilities

  • Obtains blood specimens from patients by performing venipuncture or finger sticks
  • collects urine specimens
  • always follows standard precautions
  • disposes of all sharp in appropriate sharp containers
  • prioritizes Stat versus scheduled blood draws
  • Identifies correct patient by using two identifiers and compares to requisition
  • Identifies appropriate color top tube and the volume of blood needed for each test
  • Completes the requisition forms and properly labels specimens
  • Identifies test as in house or send out
  • based on where test to be completed, completes paperwork and prepares specimen based on the criteria
  • Reviews electronic health record to confirm test ordered is appropriate and diagnosis is assigned
  • Assists with clinic operations and patient care functions including rooming patients and collecting vital signs
  • Maintains a clean environment prepared for patient care
  • Monitors supplies and inventory to ensure sufficient levels
  • Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and local regulation
