Performs a variety of laboratory tasks in the ambulatory (clinic) setting, to include order management, specimen collection (venipuncture and capillary puncture specimens), and waived testing. Processes specimens to allow for safe transport when indicated. Provides specimen collection services in multiple clinic settings, including primary care and specialty care. Works closely with other laboratory personnel, Patient Care Services staff, healthcare providers, and patients to obtain high quality specimens while demonstrating the Stormont Vail Tenets. The role involves obtaining and properly identifying blood specimens by performing venipunctures and capillary punctures in all age groups and patient types, accessing and managing test orders from the electronic medical record system, processing specimens, preparing specimens for transport, performing and resulting waived point of care tests, and instructing patients on specimen collection procedures. The Phlebotomist is expected to follow specific service standards, assist with teaching and mentoring interns, maintain supply stock, and respond to patient adverse reactions to venipuncture. Travel to alternate clinic locations may be required.
