About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Support Services (LSS) Supervisor, provides guidance and ancillary service for clinical activities by performance of specimen procurement, related specialized procedures, specimen processing and reference lab processing according to LSS policy and procedures based on standards set the National Certifying Agency for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS). Position: Phlebotomist I Department: Phlebotomy Services Schedule: Part Time, 16 Hours, Saturday and Sunday 2:30pm-11pm

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Excellent English communication skills (oral and written) and interpersonal skills are required to communicate effectively with internal and external contacts in a courteous and customer service manner.
  • Demonstrates technical competency using hospital computer systems such as Microsoft Office, patient registration systems (e.g. EPIC), and Laboratory Information Systems (e.g. Sunquest).
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills; strong attention to detail, organizational ability and follow-through.
  • Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality of all personal/health sensitive information
  • Ability to effectively handle challenging situations and to balance multiple priorities.
  • BMC requires all staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and flu, as well as receive a booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Nice To Haves

  • Phlebotomy, and/or specimen processing experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direction in the assigned workstation by assisting the staff in the daily operation of the workstation.
  • Performs all the essential duties and responsibilities of a Laboratory Support Phlebotomist.
  • Performs all the essential duties and responsibilities of a Laboratory Support Technician.
  • Reviews reference lab test results for accuracy, completeness, appropriate coded comments or free text as defined by standard operating procedure
  • Releases reviewed reference lab test results from the hold file, as assigned.
  • Provides a lead role in creating a team approach to ensure that the workstation adheres to the stated turnaround time for processing of stat and routine specimens.
  • Acts a technical resource for staff in assigned workstation.
  • Ensures scheduled equipment maintenance is performed.
  • Recognizes and resolves technical and non-technical problems in the laboratory.
  • Obtains help in problem resolution as appropriate.
  • Records information on the problem log and reports all problems to supervisory staff.
  • Trains new employees in assigned workstation.
  • Records late and sick calls for staff in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Ensures quality patients services in assigned workstation.
  • Informs other laboratory sections of labeling problems, patient identification or medical record number problem.
  • Participates in Quality Improvement (QI) activities according to Laboratory QI Policies.
  • Maintains initial and annual competency documentation as outlined in LSS policy and procedures.
  • Attends departmental continuing education classes during the year.
  • Attends all scheduled staff meeting or, if unable, accepts responsibility for reading meeting minutes on work time.
  • Supports technical training of departmental staff members, encompassing new employees, new procedures and cross training.
  • Furthers the mission and philosophy of the hospital; treats all hospital staff, patients and visitors with courtesy and respect.
  • Communicates all important information regarding the laboratory (i.e. inventory, testing status and instrument status) to fellow staff members.
  • Answers the telephone according to departmental policy in order to respond to result inquires and requests.
  • Works cooperatively with other laboratory staff members and takes initiative to determine where assistance is needed and renders assistance.
  • Reports all incidents, safety hazards or accidents to appropriate personnel.
  • Respects patient and employee confidentiality.
  • Keeps equipment and work area neat, orderly and well stocked; put supplies away when received.
  • Performs assignments with a minimum of direction and is available to help others.
  • Plans and prioritizes tasks and adjusts to variable workloads.
  • Assesses the inventory on a weekly basis in assigned work area and notifies Assistant Supervisor or Supervisor of supply needs.
  • Utilizes hospital's Values as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the division's hospital mission.
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
  • Performs other duties as needed.
