This position involves performing phlebotomy functions and non-technical duties within South Shore Health, a not-for-profit, charitable health system. Requirements

  • Equivalent of four (4) years of high school education preferred.
  • One (1) year of full time experience preferred.
  • Certified or certified eligible with National Phlebotomy Association preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, and heelstick) according to established procedures, ensuring correct technique and minimal patient discomfort.
  • Identify patients and properly label specimen tubes at the bedside, using patient armbands and automated patient identification systems.
  • Determine priority of STAT draws, ensuring timely collection (within 10-15 minutes for STATs, immediately for severe trauma/disaster) and transport of all patient specimens to the lab.
  • Utilize computers for assigned functions, including verifying information for accuracy, performing order entry without errors, and generating/managing collection lists.
  • Organize assigned work, accurately complete workload statistics, and ensure all assigned patients are drawn by the end of the shift.
  • Assist co-workers with blood-drawing procedures and communicate with laboratory departments and floors regarding patients not drawn or problems in obtaining specimens.
  • Under supervision, assist in the training of new employees and student interns in departmental phlebotomy procedures, acting as a resource.
  • Follow all organizational and department/unit policies and procedures, readily accepting changes in assignment and performing work of equal or lesser responsibility as needed.
  • Act as a receptionist, greeting patients and answering phones promptly and courteously in the outpatient lab when required.
  • Be responsible for the daily cleaning of equipment and maintaining neatness throughout the department, including phlebotomy baskets, stock, and work areas.
  • Record daily refrigerator temperatures and notify the Supervisor if temperatures fall outside established limits.
  • Be receptive to technological solutions for work processes and practices.
  • Foster a "Culture of Safety" by consistently adhering to established Laboratory and Hospital policies for Universal Precautions and Safety Procedures, utilizing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when handling blood/body fluids, and knowing where to find Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
