Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Specialized training in phlebotomy
  • Ability to work cooperatively with all types of personalities both inside and outside the organization
  • Requires travel to various sites

Nice To Haves

  • One year of experience in an outpatient or acute care facility in an equivalent role, preferred
  • Phlebotomy certification with the National Phlebotomy Association or American Society of Clinical Pathology (or eligible), preferred
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification, preferred

Responsibilities

  • Determine and execute the best method for obtaining biological specimens from patients of all ages (venipuncture, capillary, heel-stick) to ensure quality specimens for testing. Follow established productivity guidelines with minimal errors.
  • Order appropriate tests in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) as requested by authorized providers. Resolve unusual or unclear test orders by contacting the ordering provider; respond to requests for lab results and send scheduled reports.
  • Interact with patients in a professional and compassionate manner, explaining procedures, addressing concerns, and ensuring comfort during blood collection.
  • Prepare aliquots of samples and shipping batches for transport within the hospital campus or to contracted laboratories following vendor protocols. Register, draw, and ship client specimens.
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment by following procedures, rules, and regulations. Promote inter- and intradepartmental workflow through cooperation and effective handoffs.
  • Maintain laboratory supply inventory and conserve resources by using equipment and supplies appropriately.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and troubleshoot equipment problems to the full extent of ability.
  • Practice proper patient identification verification; manage work queues to ensure accurate and complete registration including demographics, insurance, service date, ordering caregiver, and special flags.
  • Actively participate in the laboratory quality plan/program (e.g., investigative reports, notification of delays).
  • Participate in the training of new staff and students by serving as a mentor and technical resource.
