The University of Kansas Health System Phlebotomist is a position within the clinical laboratory responsible for interpreting lab orders from both internal and external providers, accurately identifying correct tube types for each test. The Phlebotomist must adhere to regulatory, accreditation, safety, and hospital standards, policies, and procedures, performing positive patient identification before and after blood draws. In ambulatory settings, they confirm labeling with the patient, while in in-patient settings, they match tubes with the patient's wristband. This role requires understanding pre-analytical variables affecting laboratory results and participation in quality assurance/improvement. Responsibilities include releasing orders from the Hospital Information System (HIS), receiving specimens in the Laboratory Information System (LIS), and processing specimens (centrifugation, aliquoting, pouring off plasma/serum). The Phlebotomist is considered the "face" of the clinical laboratory, expected to be professional, respectful, and courteous, following AIDET guidelines for customer service. In ambulatory settings, they prepare specimens for transport by scanning bar-coded samples onto a LIS packing list. They must troubleshoot difficult orders and assist with missing specimens, perform data entry, manage requisitions, and answer telephones for laboratory customers. The position demands a patient-focused individual capable of multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment. Working hours for this position are 1200-2030.
