Position Summary: Performs phlebotomy for collection of blood specimens throughout the medical center. Maintains specimen collection component of the LIS. Performs patient registration functions for courier specimens. Requirements

• High school graduate or GED required.
• Phlebotomy certification (CPT) or health-related experience preferred. On-the-job training may be given.
• Good interpersonal skills required.
• Typing and basic computer skills required.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates proficiency in phlebotomy and specimen collection using appropriate collection techniques and devices as appropriate for age of patient.
• Demonstrates safe handling and proper collection techniques to maintain integrity and quality of specimens
• Demonstrates correct procedure for labeling, accessioning, and delivering specimens to the proper department.
• Responds promptly to phlebotomy requests for STATs, ASAPs, NOWs and outpatients, with a supportive and cooperative attitude.
• Communicates information to appropriate areas, departments and individuals. Alerts appropriate staff concerning STAT orders.
