How you’ll contribute A Phlebotomist who excels in this performs venipuncture and specimen collection/processing; completes chain-of-custody collections and breath alcohol testing as required; supports order entry and related clerical workflows; answers laboratory phones and provides customer service; assists with inventory of phlebotomy supplies.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • License: Must hold a current Laboratory Assistant (Phlebotomy) License issued by the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health (DPBH). Candidates with a pending license status may be considered for hire; an active license must be obtained within six (6) months of hire. All required training and certification fees related to a Laboratory Assistant licensure are the responsibility of the applicant. This position requires an additional Point-of-Care (POC) Analyst License. Required training and certification must be completed within six (6) months of hire. Associated POC training and certification fees will be covered by the hospital.
  • Certifications: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification is required.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews providers’ orders, quick-registers patients when needed, and places appropriate lab orders per the provider’s requisition.
  • Verifies patient identity using two patient identifiers prior to collection.
  • Obtains blood specimens via venipuncture, finger stick, or heel stick per policy; collects urine, throat, and nasal specimens as ordered.
  • Labels specimens with at least two identifiers plus date/time and collector initials; ensures specimen integrity and proper handling.
  • Performs chain-of-custody urine drug screen collections and breath alcohol testing per policy.
  • Coordinates therapeutic drug-monitoring collections in collaboration with nursing to align dose and draw time.
  • Resolves unusual or unclear test orders by contacting the ordering provider, pathologist, nursing station, or reference lab; elevates unresolved items to the supervisor.
  • Processes and routes specimens to the correct internal lab departments or reference laboratories according to policy.
  • Maintains par levels of collection supplies; completes weekly departmental inventories.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities and required education.
