The primary responsibilities of a phlebotomist are performing venipuncture and capillary blood collections and ordering tests in the computer system. The phlebotomist performs blood collections on all types of patients including inpatients, outpatients, emergency room patients and nursing home patients. The phlebotomist also helps with maintaining laboratory files, ensures proper routing of reports, and preparing daily management reports.
