About The Position

The primary responsibilities of a phlebotomist are performing venipuncture and capillary blood collections and ordering tests in the computer system. The phlebotomist performs blood collections on all types of patients including inpatients, outpatients, emergency room patients and nursing home patients. The phlebotomist also helps with maintaining laboratory files, ensures proper routing of reports, and preparing daily management reports. Requirements

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Physical strength to perform the following lifting demands: • Floor to waist – 30 pounds • 14” to waist – 30 pounds • Waist to shoulder – 30 pounds • Shoulder to overhead – 10 pounds • Carry 30 pounds for 30 feet • Push 25 pounds/force for 15 feet • Pull 25 pounds/force for 15 feet
  • May be required to lift, push, pull, or carry equipment, supplies, etc.
  • Must be able to move intermittently, walking, standing, and bending, throughout an 8-10 hour day.
  • Intelligence –Ability to understand instructions, reason, and make judgments.
  • Emotional – Ability to cope with mental and emotional stress associated with fast paced physical activity, demands of patients and their families, and maintaining and effective working relationship with peers, physicians, and other health care workers.
  • Verbal – Ability to speak, read, and write the English language in an understandable manner. Ability to understand the meaning of words and ideas associated with them.
  • Motor Coordination – Ability to coordinate eyes and hands to fingers rapidly and accurately in making precise movements with speed; to skillfully manage multiple pieces of equipment, tubs, tourniquets, and needles.
  • Diploma from a 6-8 week phlebotomy course or phlebotomy experience from previous employment is preferred.
  • High school graduates may be trained for this position.
  • Must be able to deal with the public in a pleasing and efficient manner.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with no driving restrictions

Responsibilities

  • Performs venipuncture and capillary blood collections on neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Greets people coming to the laboratory for laboratory services; gives assistance when requested; acts as a direct laboratory contact with the public.
  • Deals with neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients in an appropriate and professional manner.
  • Performs temporary registration for reference and nursing home patients.
  • Orders outpatient tests in the CPSI Computer System.
  • Files laboratory reports and requisitions. Maintains report and requisition files so they are readily retrievable.
  • Maintains logs of tests sent to reference labs.
  • Prints daily management reports for the Director of Laboratory Services.
  • Answers incoming phone calls and directs inquiries to appropriate person or department.
  • Drives to area nursing homes to collect blood samples when necessary.
