About The Position

Beckley Healthcare Center, a member of the CommuniCare family of Healthcare Companies, is currently recruiting for a Part Time Phlebotomist. Position Summary The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing venipuncture and capillary blood collection on residents in a skilled nursing facility in accordance with physician orders, facility policies, infection control standards, and applicable state and federal regulations. The Phlebotomist ensures accurate specimen collection, proper labeling, documentation, and timely transport to designated laboratories while maintaining resident dignity, safety, and comfort.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Knowledge of venipuncture techniques and specimen handling procedures.
  • Ability to work with elderly residents, including those with dementia or behavioral health diagnoses.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and manage daily lab schedules.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have a valid unencumbered driver's license.
  • Must be willing to travel to deliver labs.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of accredited phlebotomy training program preferred.
  • Phlebotomy certification (e.g., ASCP, NHA, AMT) preferred or required per state law.
  • Current CPR certification preferred.
  • Prior experience in long-term care, skilled nursing, hospital, or clinical setting preferred.
  • Experience with geriatric population strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection following physician orders and facility protocols.
  • Properly identify residents using two identifiers prior to specimen collection.
  • Label specimens accurately at bedside per policy.
  • Complete required documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Ensure specimens are processed and transported to contracted laboratories in a timely manner.
  • Monitor residents for adverse reactions (e.g., dizziness, bleeding, hematoma) and report concerns to nursing staff immediately.
  • Follow standard precautions and infection prevention protocols at all times.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of phlebotomy supplies and equipment.
  • Dispose of sharps and biohazard materials according to OSHA guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively with nurses, providers, laboratory personnel, residents, and families.
  • Maintain confidentiality of resident information in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Participate in in-service training and competency evaluations as required.
  • Adheres to CMS regulations applicable to skilled nursing facilities.
  • Follows facility policies related to infection control, resident rights, and safety.
  • Complies with OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen standards.
  • Reports incidents, errors, or concerns according to facility policy.
