About The Position

The Phlebotomist works under the general supervision of the Lab Preanalytical Manager and serves as an integral member of the Laboratory department. This role is responsible for the collection, ordering, and submission of samples for analysis, while ensuring the preparation, safety, and comfort of patients during procedures. The phlebotomist needs strong communication skills, critical thinking, and the ability to interact with various members of the healthcare delivery team. Basic computer skills are essential for accessing resources in the Hospital Information System and the Laboratory Information System. The position requires demonstrating knowledge and skills appropriate for the age of the patients served. Responsibilities

  • Collect, order, and submit samples for analysis.
  • Assume responsibility for the preparation, safety, and comfort of patients during procedures.
  • Utilize standard venipuncture techniques to collect appropriate blood specimens and maintain their integrity by correct collection protocol.
  • Perform specialized blood collection tests such as blood cultures, adhering to defined protocol with no deviations.
  • Adhere to strict standards when labeling blood specimens/non-blood specimens and provide required information, ensuring adequate patient identification with each patient encounter.
  • Follow all defined policies and procedures for universal blood and body fluid precautions and Infection Control practices.
  • Maintain appropriate professionalism at all times, explaining blood collection to patients while ensuring patient rights, safety, privacy, confidentiality, and adherence to the "customer relations" philosophy.
  • Perform Urine Drug Screen and COC collection, Blood Alcohol, and H. Pylori Breath test according to defined protocol.
  • Manage patient workload.
  • Demonstrate competence with Laboratory Information System.
  • Process specimens ensuring proper identification and monitoring specimen integrity for testing.
  • Perform specimen sorting, computer receipt/changing orders, centrifugation, and specimen aliquoting.
  • Deliver identified specimens to the laboratory either via pneumatic tube system or manual transport in a timely manner to ensure accurate reporting and turn around times.
  • Transport specimens between facilities as assigned.
  • Maintain phlebotomy trays and phlebotomy supply inventory.
  • Perform off-site phlebotomy as assigned.
  • Identify when questions or activities are beyond personal skill mix and use critical thinking skills to determine the most appropriate resource to utilize.
  • Maintain current knowledge and skill needed to effectively and accurately access available resources (i.e. SOFT, Mayo, etc.).
  • Demonstrate service recovery by involving Customer Service, Patient Relations, or Preanalytical Services Manager.
  • Demonstrate ability to properly utilize Vocera.
  • Attend Phlebotomy staff meetings or read and acknowledge meeting minutes.
  • Demonstrate current knowledge of the organizational occurrence reporting process and expectations.
  • Identify opportunities to participate with quality improvement initiatives/teams.
  • Maintain CAP regulations and guidelines in all phlebotomy practices.
  • Perform all Laboratory order entry accurately.
  • Use critical thinking to identify the need to contact Diagnostics Customer Service for assistance.
  • Understand how to order specimens collected on different days.
  • Demonstrate ability to verify medical necessity.
  • Identify when to present the Advanced Beneficiary Notification (ABN) to the patient and how to explain the ABN to the patient.
  • Help the patient to understand what to expect related to receiving a bill if initial check shows that Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will not reimburse the hospital for the ordered testing.
  • Understand and communicate when the specimen needs to be collected within a specific time frame or when the patient is fasting.
  • Demonstrate ability to identify a compliant diagnostic order.
  • Know how to contact the physician if a compliant order is needed or if edits need to be made to an existing order.
