About The Position

The Phlebotomist 1 draws and collects blood samples from patients, verifies records and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis. Performs all pre-analytical functions. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Develops a complete understanding of specimen collection and handling in order to preserve specimen validity and integrity. Relies on establish guidelines to accomplish tasks and works under close supervision. Must have excellent customer service skills.

The Phlebotomist 2 draws and collects blood samples from patients, verifies records and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis. Performs all pre-analytical functions. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Relies on establish guidelines to accomplish tasks. Develops a complete understanding of specimen collection and handling in order to preserve specimen validity and integrity. Must have excellent customer service skills and frequently works independently outside the main lab. May direct or lead the work of others.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent
• See certification requirements
• Good interpersonal/human relations skills
• Good oral/written communication skills
• Good teamwork skills
• Good critical thinking/decision making skills
• Good organizational skills
• Phlebotomy, MLA, or MA certification or license obtained within three (3) months of employment
• Certified Phlebotomist or obtain a La. Medical Laboratory Assistant license
• 1 year Phlebotomy Experience

Responsibilities

• Draws and collects blood samples from patients
• Verifies records
• Prepares specimens for laboratory analysis
• Performs all pre-analytical functions
• Maintains a safe environment for self, co-workers, patients and visitors
• Receives and accepts specimens into the Lab Information System
• Operates laboratory centrifuge for specimen processing
• Performs clinical specimen and order processing functions
• Follows procedures for the aseptic collection of samples for blood culture
• Maintains phlebotomy areas in a sanitary and properly supplied condition
• Ensures positive patient identification and specimen labeling
• Properly utilizes all specimen collection devices and techniques
• Participates in committees, department processes and special projects as assigned
• Completes other duties as assigned
