About the position

The Phlebotomist plays a crucial role in the healthcare team, specializing in specimen collection, patient care, and laboratory procedures. This position involves performing venipuncture on patients of all ages, including children, and requires strong communication and organizational skills to ensure efficient workflow and patient satisfaction.

Responsibilities

• Prepares equipment to efficiently collect blood products.
• Performs venipuncture, arterial and capillary punctures on patients as directed by physician and following medical practice protocols related to safety, infection control, and confidentiality.
• Conducts laboratory tests on specimens and enters data into the computer.
• Assists donor before, during, and after donation, instructing on urine collection procedures.
• Cleans/sterilizes equipment, instruments, and work area following safety, cleanliness, and infection control procedures.
• Inventories supplies and places orders to ensure adequate supplies for procedures.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Graduation from an accredited medical vocational institution with phlebotomy course diploma.
• Minimum one year of pediatric phlebotomy experience.
• ASCP certification required; Certification as medical assistant preferred but not required.
• Current CPR certificate.
• Experience with MS Office, preferably in Excel and Word; ability to work with limited supervision; possess strong verbal communication skills, good organization skills and attention to detail.

Nice-to-haves

• National certification through American Medical Technologists as a registered phlebotomy technician is helpful but not required.
• Medical practice experience is helpful.
