About The Position

This is a training role within the Fairview phlebotomy team, designed to teach the art of phlebotomy through classroom instruction and clinical rotation. Upon successful completion, trainees may be eligible for placement into a Laboratory Care Technician (LCT) role. The position is a daytime role, typically Monday–Friday, with varying start times between 5:00 AM and 8:00 AM, requiring schedule flexibility. Working in a healthcare environment with diverse populations, the Phlebotomy Trainee provides quality, proficient, and professional services in line with M Health Fairview Values. Key responsibilities include performing laboratory specimen collection at various M Health Fairview or outreach locations, ensuring safe and secure specimen handling, and accurately entering orders and collection information into the Laboratory Information System and associated subsystems. The trainee monitors computer logs for incomplete work and schedules tests/procedures, with attention to detail and accuracy being crucial for quality laboratory services. This role serves as an entry point for the phlebotomy certification process, with potential for advancement to an LCT role after successful employment for the required period to sit for the certification examination.

Requirements

  • Minimum age (18 years)
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Diploma, GED, or equivalent must be provided
  • Demonstrate the ability to work under stress in a variety of situations.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Demonstrate manual dexterity.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Some positions will require reliable transportation.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior laboratory experience in a hospital or clinic setting in a similar capacity.
  • Prior direct contact with patients in a health care setting.
  • Exposure to/or experience with computerized order/data entry systems.
  • Prior work experience in an environment requiring critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrate effective team work ethic in prior positions.

Responsibilities

  • Follows established guidelines to obtain biological specimens and perform procedures.
  • Collects biological specimens with appropriate technique following established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Performs phlebotomy at various sites and communicates special handling needs of the specimen.
  • Uses appropriate communications skills to meet patient/family and other customer needs.
  • Ensures specimens are acceptable for testing including properly identified.
  • Processes specimens prior to testing or sending to reference labs.
  • Monitors inventory, ordering and restocking supplies.
  • Prioritizes work to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
  • Prioritizes assigned work.
  • Transports blood and body fluid under proper conditions and in a timely and safe manner.
  • Seeks assistance appropriately for problem or unusual situations.
  • Accurately enters and releases order and collection information into LIS and subsystems.
  • Monitors computer logs for incomplete work.
  • Schedules tests/procedures.
  • Acquires additional computer skills as appropriate to the work area.
  • Supports and adheres to laboratory quality assurance program.
  • Maintains a safe work environment.
  • Adheres to safety protocols.
  • Follows infection control guidelines.
  • Responds appropriately to emergent situations.
