About The Position

The Phlebotomist I is responsible for accurately collecting patient specimens for diagnostic testing in a professional medical environment. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers is required.
  • RPT (Registered Phlebotomy Technician) AMT or PBT (Phlebotomy Technician) ASCP certification preferred.
  • Six (6) months of laboratory experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick) according to established procedures.
  • Identify patients using two patient identifiers and label specimens accurately.
  • Determine the correct priority for specimen collections (STAT, Routine, ASAP, etc.).
  • Collect and receive specimens into the laboratory utilizing computer protocols.
  • Ensure timely transport and processing of all patient specimens for testing.
  • File patients' lab reports and requisitions, and send reports to outside hospitals and clinics.
  • Post charges and reconcile invoices, investigating complex bills as needed.
  • Research and resolve any questionable patient orders and enter patient demographic data accurately.
  • Maintain required lab records and logs, and collect statistics for reports as directed by the manager.
  • Perform complex specimen set-up and enter complex orders and results.
  • Pack and ship infectious materials, communicating special situations related to specimens or testing with appropriate staff.
  • Clean and maintain equipment, centrifuges, and refrigerators, recording daily temperatures.
  • Order supplies and maintain sufficient inventory for phlebotomy services.
  • Assist in the training of new associates and students, acting as a receptionist when needed.
  • Document and communicate information thoroughly and accurately, utilizing equipment according to departmental guidelines.
  • Maintain a neat and clean work area, disposing of waste appropriately and restocking supplies as needed.
  • Promote the mission, vision, and values of SCL Health and abide by service behavior standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
