About The Position

The Phlebotomist position at East Tennessee Children's Hospital involves performing venipunctures and capillary sticks to collect specimens for laboratory procedures. The role requires assisting with various laboratory and hospital duties that do not necessitate licensure. The position is part-time and reports to the Director of the Laboratory.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • One year of experience as a phlebotomist preferred.
  • Organizational and communication skills required.
  • Working knowledge and experience with venipuncture and skin puncture techniques.
  • Knowledgeable about collection tubes, test requirements, and safety aspects of phlebotomy.
  • Ability to multi-task and handle stress appropriately in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work well with others and display a courteous professional attitude.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipunctures and capillary sticks to collect specimens for laboratory procedures.
  • Assist with other laboratory and hospital duties as assigned.
  • Ensure correctness of specimens collected and labeled, including clerical duties and quality improvement tasks.
  • Maintain technical and clinical standards of the work area.
  • Demonstrate reliability and speed in collections, labeling, and specimen processing.
  • Meet deadlines for stat, urgent, routine, and timed specimen collections.
  • Maintain an efficient work environment related to quality specimens and timely collections.
  • Identify patients by checking name and E number on patient armband.
  • Label all specimen tubes following established procedures, including date, time of draw, and phlebotomist initials.
  • Comply with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures.
  • Demonstrate respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees.
  • Perform venipuncture using correct technique and with minimal discomfort to the patient.
  • Perform fingerstick procedures when unable to obtain specimens by venipuncture.
  • Help train new employees and student interns in phlebotomy duties under supervision.
  • Promote effective working relations and work effectively as part of a team to meet departmental goals.
  • Accept any other assignments as requested.
  • Minimize costs in supplies, time, and training to collect and process specimens.
