As a Phlebotomist at our facility you will be an integral part of our Laboratory team. We are a highly functioning team that supports many different departments and has a passion for providing the best patient care through compassionate, professional interactions and reliable testing. In this role, you will be accountable for adhering to our mission including meeting behavioral expectations (compassion, caring and confidentiality), providing excellence in health care delivery, supporting dignity of all persons (empowerment) and responsible stewardship of resources. You will receive orders either by telephone or requisition from the nursing units or physicians; enter requests on computer by patient number, operator and tests ordered and travel to patient site, as necessary, to obtain specimens. You will prepare skin site and perform venipuncture and skin punctures according to established aseptic techniques to obtain blood specimens in accordance with physicians orders. You will instruct patients in specimen collection methods and procedures (i.e., urinalysis and bacteriology), and obtain specimens for culture and analysis. You will label and record specimens obtained, transport them to the laboratory and distribute to appropriate laboratory area for analysis. You will follow guidelines that maintain safety for oneself, patients, visitors and co-workers and if classified as a category I or II employee under OSHA regulations, adhere to OSHA standards by wearing personal protective equipment, following universal precautions and being knowledgeable about blood borne pathogens. You will perform other duties as may be assigned. You will collect blood samples and urine from patients for laboratory testing including blood cultures. You will register specimens and orders tests in LIS and prepare/label samples for internal or external testing. You will communicate lab test requests and results to appropriate staff, departments, and/or physicians. You will collect and document urine drug screens requiring chain of custody. You will assist with in-services or training as assigned. You will assist with administrative duties within the laboratory.
