About The Position

The Phlebotomist/Computer Operator/Processor performs venipuncture and collects other specimens for laboratory testing. Responsibilities include labeling specimen containers accurately, delivering them to the proper destination in a timely manner, and performing order entry duties as required. The position requires understanding and providing for the specific communication, developmental, and treatment needs of patients ranging from neonate-birth to geriatric. Compliance with the Standards of Behavior and department policies, procedures, and regulations is essential.

Requirements

  • HS Diploma or equivalent
  • Successful completion of an accredited Phlebotomy Program
  • Ability to draw an average of 7 patients per hour within the first 90 days of employment
  • Proficient in the use of Laboratory Information System within the first 90 days of employment
  • Must be ASCP eligible
  • BLS certification
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for procurement and distribution of specimens (blood, urine, etc.)
  • Perform computer data entry and operation of computer equipment
  • Provide and understand at the bedside the specific communication and collection needs of patients
  • Process and receive specimens for the technical staff
  • Prepare send out specimens for reference testing
  • Answer incoming calls for the laboratory
  • Monitor phlebotomy supply inventory and rotate supplies as needed
  • Perform breath alcohol and urine drug screen collections
  • Perform SLED collections
  • Respond to ALL traumas, code strokes, and codes sepsis in the ED
  • Respond to ALL medical alerts and emergencies for inpatient floors
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of work-related information
  • Work irregular/flexible hours including holidays
  • Have dependable transportation (including inclement weather)
  • Withstand the stress and demands of an active position
  • Withstand constant standing, walking, stooping, and bending
  • Respond calmly and efficiently in crisis situations
  • Work as a team member and interact positively with others
  • Work at optimum speed with accuracy and efficiency
  • Take directions and respond quickly and efficiently
  • Lift moderate weights up to 50 pounds
  • Handle moderate chemical exposure
  • Pass a color vision test
  • Maintain normal hearing range required in daily work
