Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) required.
  • Minimum of 1 year related work experience required.
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), certified medical assistant (CMA) or similar.
  • Military experience as US Army 68W Combat Medic, 18D, US Navy Hospital Corpsman, and related medical specialties.
  • Graduation from Geisinger's School of Phlebotomy Program.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a wide range of tasks to provide a specimen of highest analytical quality for testing.
  • Independently perform venipunctures and skin punctures on all age groups, from neonates through adults.
  • Obtain blood specimens and process specimens for analysis.
  • Utilize appropriate computer systems to register patients and facilitate billing.
  • Perform overall specimen accessioning and processing.
  • Explain the blood drawing process and show a comforting attitude toward patients.
  • Exhibit knowledge of adequate and correct collection requirements.
  • Perform accessioning procedures accurately to ensure positive identification of specimens.
  • Recognize and resolve discrepancies as appropriate.
  • Evaluate specimen suitability and acceptability.
  • Perform testing and record Point of Care instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and quality control as assigned.
  • Handle and replenish reagents and supplies according to established protocols.
  • Follow established reporting procedures as appropriate.
  • Navigate and access multiple computer applications as needed.
  • Provide phlebotomy coverage as required to Medical Group offices, skilled nursing facilities, or perform in-home phlebotomy for homebound patients.
